Creating A Ribbon In Photoshop

In this tutorial i will show you the way that i create a basic straight ribbon in photoshop.

I am using photoshop cs3 but im sure you will be able to do this in other versions.

Save my pattern below to your computer.

First open up my pattern in photoshop and go to Edit>Define Pattern, you can now close the original.

File>New, create a new image 3600x200px 300dpi with a transparent background.
Choose a colour in the Foreground then Select your Paint Bucket Tool and fill the canvas with your colour.
Layer>New Layer.

Contents - Pattern

Then use the little arrow below the contents box to find the pattern you just saved:

Click ok then reduce the fill opacity on that layer to 10%:

Layer>Merge Down, Filter>Noise>Add Noise:

Amount - 4.00%
Distribution - Uniform

Make sure Monochromatic is checked then click ok.

Click on your rectangular Marquee tool and draw out a selection right along the top of your ribbon like below:

Layer>New>Layer Via Copy.
On your new layer go to Filter>Texture>Texturiser and use these settings:

Layer>Duplicate Layer, Edit>Transform>Flip Vertical, place this at the bottom of your ribbon.
Layer>Merge Down
Now click on your bottom layer to activate it, Layer>Layer Style>Inner Shadow use these settings:

Right click on the layer and Convert to Smart Object then right click again and Rasterize Layer.
Layer>Merge Down.

And thats it!

If you want to keep your ribbon for recolouring go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate then
save on your computer for the next time you need it.

I hope you enjoyed my Tutorial.
